There have been a few times when I knew the Holy Spirit was leading me away from the familiar and comfortable and into something new and uncertain.

These experiences have broadened my world, the types of people I interact with daily, and my view of my Heavenly Father. In each instance, God has allowed challenges to keep me humble, victories to make me thankful, and even some wounds that have reminded me to let him lead.

If you are seeking something more than ordinary out of this life, I highly recommend following Jesus, regardless of where He leads you. It wonโ€™t necessarily be safe or predictable, but it deeply satisfies the desire we all have to be a part of something bigger than we are.

Shattering My Shell

That said, Iโ€™ve not always been eager to embrace opportunities for growth. The summer before eighth grade, my parents informed me that they had enrolled me in a summer technology camp for the blind. I was horrified, but despite my protests, they dropped me off every morning, where I spent the day with a dozen or so other blind kids.

My protective shell was quickly shattered when I realized I was the only kid there dealing with just blindness. All the other participants had multiple wide-ranging disabilities, and I quickly found myself insecure and out of my element. So, instead of embracing the opportunity to learn my way around a computer with voice technology, I simply shut down and allowed my fear of the unfamiliar to prevent me from learning anything new.

It's natural to want to put ourselves first, to look out for our own interests, but Jesus models self-sacrifice, calling us to be a part of his upside-down kingdom where we seek the good of others before our own.

Shining Like Lights in a Dark World

Our world prioritizes external success, the recognition that comes when the spotlight is trained on you. But Paul calls us to cultivate the inner light of Christ, a steady glow of the Spirit that quietly dispels the darkness around us.

What Accounting Taught Me About Descent and Glory

In our fallen state, we naturally grasp upward, reaching for recognition, status, glory; Paul points to Jesus and shows us a better way, the way of humility.
